Wyoming has seven community colleges and one public university. Aspiring students can avail of the many scholarships offered, based on academic excellence or according to the chosen field.

Hathaway Scholarship: This popular scholarship is established by the State of Wyoming. The awards can be used by the students to attend the University of Wyoming or any community college in the state. The scholarships are awarded at three levels; Opportunity, Performance and Honors. The common eligibility criteria require the applicant to be a Wyoming resident and graduated from a state high school. The award is granted for a period equal to eight full-time semesters.

An Opportunity scholarship awards $800 per semester to students with 2.5 cumulative GPA (high school) and composite ACT score of 19. A GPA of 2.25 is required to continue receiving the grant.

Performance scholarship awards $1,200 per semester where the student requires 3.00 GPA and 21 on the ACT. 2.50 GPA is to be maintained thereafter.

An Honors scholarship has an award that is the highest of the three with $1,600 per semester and accordingly requires 3.50 GPA with 25 on ACT, plus a 2.50 GPA for continual grant.

University of Wyoming Alumni Association Scholarship: Awards of $1,500 per year for four years are available for those seniors that graduate among the top 33% in their class and are involved in extracurricular activities not only in school but also in their communities. Selection is done by the Alumni Scholarship committee. The scholarship also requires that the applicant be admitted to the University of Wyoming.

  • University of Wyoming Honors Program Stipend: Only students that enter the university’s Honors Program can avail of this scholarship. Eligibility criteria for the graduating high school senior require a 3.7 GPA, or composite ACT of 28, or combined SAT of 1240. Student maintaining 3.25 GPA can receive the award up to eight semesters.
  • Superior Students in Education Scholarship: Sixteen scholarships are awarded to high school graduates who wish to teach within the state. The grant can be used at the university or the seven colleges for up to ten semesters while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a teacher related program.
  • Douvas Memorial Scholarship: $500 is awarded to a first generation American student who desires to attend college. The applicant aged between 18-22 years is required to be a resident of Wyoming and a high school senior. The grant can be used at the University of Wyoming or any of the state’s seven community colleges.

Wyoming Grants for College

Wyoming County Commissioners’ Scholarships: A student wanting to study at the University of Wyoming or any of the community colleges can avail of this scholarship. The scholarship welcomes non-traditional students including graduates, independent students and those in professional programs. $500 per semester is awarded and is eligible for renewal. The selection criteria accounts for GPA, ACT and extracurricular activities.

Unfortunately not everyone can be awarded a scholarship or grant, so if you are amongst the unlucky, do not let this deter you. You can apply for a student loan which is another great way to fund your education. The money you get will need to be repaid with interest, however the interest rate is very low and therefore an attraction option for many students.
