Scholarships In Washington
Washington State, capital of the US is known for its abundance of natural resources and developed industrial facilities. This is one of the principle reasons why the state has always encouraged education and made provisions for its residents to pursue higher studies through various scholarships and grants with a view to reducing their financial burden. A few such selected scholarships and grants are highlighted below.

Scholarships in Washington
Washington Scholars Program: This is one of Washington’s most renowned scholarships. The applicant, graduating high school, must hold one of the top three positions in his district. The scholarship will cover full tuition and other fees for a 4-year degree program at any Washington-based university or college.
Washington Promise Scholarship: Applicants must be in the next 15% of their district and have a minimum SAT score of 1200 or 27 in the ACT. An amount of $1,000 is awarded for tuition towards college or vocational training institute in Washington.
More Washington Scholarships
- Dick Larson Scholarship: Given to students of communications and media studies and political science. A maximum award of $ 4000 is made once, the minimum being $1000. An essay, references and samples of the applying candidate’s published work is required to qualify for this scholarship.
- Herb Robinson Scholarship: This is handed out to communications professionals also. A $1,000 award is given once to high school students as also those already enrolled in colleges.
- Royden M. Bodley Scholarship: A scholarship given to Boy Scouts, interested in pursuing careers in forestry, veterinary sciences, preservation of wildlife and other associated environmental subjects. An award of $1400 is made to five Eagle Scouts based in Washington, every year.
- Washington State Association for Justice Award: Awards ranging from $1000 to $3000 are given to students of law for writing an essay on a topic announced by the Association. The essay must be within five pages.
Washington Grants for College
Washington is perhaps one of the very few states that gives out grants to African American women exclusively. A few are highlighted below:
United Negros College Fund (UNCF): A grant given to single mothers of African American origin, the UNCF grant is undoubtedly the oldest and the most prestigious among all grants given to African American women.
Sister Thea Bowman Foundation Grant: This is also for Negro single mothers who wish to study at the College of St. Mary, Nebraska. Four such grants are given per annum and a sum of $30,000 is paid over four years over to the institution which adds $24,000 for selected candidates.
American Society for Engineering Education Helen T. Carr Fellowship: Given to African American students working on doctoral degree in engineering. The grant amount is $10,000.
Other grants include a pay out by the Black Nurses Association for single mothers pursuing a nursing education over four years and this ranges from $500 to $2000. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) is yet another body that helps single black women to complete undergraduate courses in finance and accounts.

Student loans are also a great way to help pay for college if you cannot receive a scholarship or grant. Although the money has to be repaid, student loans have a very low interest rate and are therefore an affordable option for many students.
