Michigan State has always been known for its heavy industrialization, particularly because of its world famous automobile units. Despite this, Michigan also has a very active agricultural economy and post-recession is concentrating more on agricultural development and is now giving scholarships to students studying in various fields of agriculture.

Scholarships in Michigan
Michigan Promise Scholarship: A grant of $4,000 is made to high school students who have qualified in a certain test during their high school final year for higher education. This has, however, been put on hold for the time being due to budget cuts made by Michigan state.
Michigan Nursing Scholarship: This is granted to students of nursing who will go on to work in the innermost rural areas of the state. Eligible BSN, LPN or AN candidates are awarded up to $4,000 a year if, after graduation, provided they agree to work in state-owned or supported health facility. One year of work at such a facility will entitle the recipient to one year’s scholarship.
More Michigan Scholarships
- Auxiliary Medical Career Scholarship: This is given by the Michigan chapter of the American Legion to nurses and therapists. Proof of the applicant’s parent or grandparent serving in the US army is also required. A grant of $500 is made to the selected candidate. The Legion also conducts the Department High School Oratorical Contest which tests the applicants’ public speaking skills. The winner gets a prize of $1,000, which rises to $18,000 at the national level.
- University Scholarship & Research Grant: This is particularly given to women students of science, technology, engineering and math by the Council of Women Technology Foundation. A first prize of $20,000 is given at the high school level; $15,000 at the undergraduate level and the same amount for graduate students. Two active member awards of $5,000 each are also handed out.
- Youth Livestock Scholarship: This grant is given out at the local State Fair. Any high school senior exhibiting at the fair over the past three years is eligible to get it. Letters of recommendations, high ACT or SAT scores and an interviewed are additional requirements. As many as 120 scholarships in different categories are given out.
Michigan Grants for College
- The state also offers the Michigan Merit Award of $3,000 to high school students if their SAT scores are good.
- Then there is the Tuition Incentive Program which encourages students to stay back in their local secondary schools and pays for college tuition at $2,000 a year.
- The Michigan Educational Opportunity Grant of $1,000 is given to students who go for vocational education. There are also other scholarships available, apart from these.
