Scholarships In Kansas




In this state of the flowing Kansas River, public colleges and universities are governed by the Kansas Board of Regents, which in addition also authorizes a number of private institutions to operate in the state of Kansas.

Scholarships in Kansas

Kansas Ethnic Minority Scholarship: This scholarship is for students who are members of ethnic/ racial groups that include African American, Indian American or Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander and Hispanic. The student should have an ACT score of 21 or SAT score of 990, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a high school rank in top 33%. Completion of the Kansas Scholars Curriculum and selection by the National Merit Corporation and College Board as a Hispanic scholar is a must. Students can receive $1,850 annually and must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA to stay eligible for renewal. Priority is given to freshmen.

Kansas State Scholarship: Kansas residents with State Scholar Designation who have taken the ACT Assessment by December of the senior year and completed the Kansas Scholars Curriculum are eligible for this scholarship. The school officials certify the 7th semester GPA and curriculum data. Such State Scholars can receive an annual amount of up to $1,000. A 3.0 cumulative GPA is to be maintained and funding to be reapplied for each year.

Vocational Educational Scholarship: 250 scholarships are offered to full-time students for designated one or two-year vocational programs at technical and community colleges. Interested students have to take a vocational test in November or March and the applicants ranked on test scores are given a scholarship of $500. Students applying or having baccalaureate degrees are not eligible.

  • Kansas Teacher Service Scholarship: Students, both under-graduate and graduate, and licensed teachers, in hard-to-fill disciplines that include special education, mathematics, science, a foreign language or English as a second language or planning to teach in an under-served geographic area, can apply for this scholarship. Amount of scholarship depends upon the credit hours with a full-time student receiving $2,698 per semester.  Interestingly this scholarship comes with a service obligation, where you have to teach in such a discipline or area for a period equal to the time for which the scholarship is received. If teaching obligation is not fulfilled the amount of scholarship has to be repaid along with the prescribed interest.
  • Kansas Nursing Service Scholarship: Programs as a Licensed Practitioner Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) receive funding for $2,500 and $3,500 respectively. But you must have a sponsor who will partially fund the scholarship and provide employment on receiving the license.

Kansas Grants for Colleges and Universities

Kansas Comprehensive Grant: This grant is based on the financial need of students who are residents of Kansas and enrolled full-time in a private or public college or university. The grant amount varies from $200 – $3,500 for private institutions and $100 – $1,500 for public institutions. The student must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with April 1 being the last date for priority receipt.

If you find you are unable to get a scholarship or grant, then it is worth considering taking out a loan. Whilst not nearly as attractive, since the money you receive will need to be repaid, loan are a viable option for many students.
