Due to the high cost of getting a college degree, many people simply can’t afford to go to college. Fortunately there are many scholarships available in the state of California, so more people can further their education.

Scholarship money can be to pay for the high cost tuition, living expenses and books. Whether you are in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose or anywhere else in the state of California, you will probably be interested in some form of financial aid for college.

Depending on your situation, determines what kind of scholarship you may be eligible for. If you are an exceptional student, you may be entitled to an academic scholarship, or if you are good at a particular sport, you may eligible for a sport scholarship.

  • CAPPS Scholarship Program – Up to $25,000 awarded to undergraduate freshmen students attending a college in California
  • Bobby Sox Scholarship Program -$1000 to $2500 awarded to graduating high school seniors who have participated in the Bobby Sox Softball Program for at least five seasons are eligible.
  • Beryl V. Smith Scholarship – This scholarship provides a $1000 scholarship  to high school seniors who have lost a parent to cancer or have a parent who is a cancer survivor. To apply you must submit a personal essay

California Grants For College

A grant is a form of need-based financial aid. The best part about grants is that the money does not need to be repaid.

There are many California grants for college students available, but eligibility depends on your individual situation. You can apply by submitting the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and if you meet the requirements, you will awarded the money.

  • Cal Grants – With a Cal Grant you can get up to $11,124 a year to pay for college expenses at any qualifying California college, university or career or technical school in California. Depending on which Cal Grant you get, the money can be used for tuition, room and board, even books and pencils. The best part is, it’s yours to keep and you don’t have to pay it back.
  • Pell Grants are awarded to low-income students and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) are for low-income students with exceptional financial need.

More financial aid for college in California

If you still find you need more financial aid for college, it may be worthwhile taking out a loan. If you apply for a student loan, it has a very low interest rate but this money will need to be repaid.
