Teaching Grants

Teachers are an important aspect to our community and to attract people to the profession, the government provides teaching grants for students.

Throughout our life, teachers help us to gain knowledge and become successful in our field of interest.  Thus, they build our future, teach us the good habits and make us a good citizen of the country. A teacher has to handle all kinds of students. Hence, they need to know how to attend to different students personally. Thus, teaching is much more difficult than it sounds.

Qualified teachers are always in a great demand as the future of all the children depends on how good the teacher is. Although teaching being such an important profession, it generally does not get the respect it deserves. Therefore, this field does not attract the best people it needs. Thus, the government is trying to provide the aspiring teaching students all kinds of financial aid. There are all kinds of teaching grants and teaching scholarships available for citizens who take up teaching as a career.

TEACH Grant

The most common type of grant available to the teaching student is the TEACH (Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education) grant. The TEACH Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families. To be eligible for the TEACH Grant, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), although you do not have to demonstrate financial need.
  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be enrolled in an educational institution that has chosen to participate in the TEACH Grant Program.
  • Be enrolled in course work that is necessary to begin a career in teaching or plan to complete such course work.

Other Teaching Grants

  • John H. Lounsbury Award – The highest award given to middle school teachers who who demonstrates service, integrity, and leadership in middle level education.
  • NEA Foundation-Nickelodeon Big Help Grants – Up to $5,000.00 could be awarded to K-8 public school educators in the form of Student Achievement grants for developing and implementing ideas that foster a sense of global awareness in 21st century students.
  • Captain Planet Foundation Grants – Awards from $250 to $2,500 are granted for initiatives that support hands-on environmental projects involving children and youths.

Teaching grants cover all the education expenses of the students who are willing to teach in that area for a minimum of 2 years after finishing the course. After the 2 years, the students can either continue or shift to an area of their choice. Some educational institutes also provide loans to students who commit to teach at the institute for some period after the completion of the course. After the completion of the teaching period, the loans are cancelled.

There are some federal grants for teaching students like the FSEOG (Federal Supplemental Education Opportunities Grant) program etc, which are available to the students of specific colleges who have applied for financial school through their institute.

There are other federal grants made available by some states to its students who plan to teach in future. Some of these are based on the level of financial need of the student and some are pure merit-based, demanding good educational background. Some of these grants have service agreements depending on the profile of the grant.

Some of the private organizations are also funding some grants to boost the career of teaching. The Rockefeller Brothers Fund is providing grants to help improve the standard of teachers in public schools.

Some grants come in the form of fellowships for the students excelling in the field of teaching. One famous example of organization that provides such scholarships is the Fund for Teachers organization.

The government is making all efforts to develop the field of teaching. Hence, if you are interested there are many grants that can be used. After all, teachers build the citizens who may one day run the nation.
